Aberfeldy.....not Alderaan

An individual hand-built genuine Aberfeldy whisky box, converted to a steampunk dimmable lamp, with clock and USB charging port.

Aberfeldy Distillery was founded by the John Dewar & Sons, Ltd. in 1896and opened in 1898. The distillery is located on the eastern outskirts of Aberfeldy, on the southern bank of the upper Tay.

The demand for barley as a basic foodstuff during World War I led to the distillery being closed from 1917 to 1919. The Second World War also caused barley supplies to be cut, and the distillery was again forced to shut down for some of this period. Supply to final markets was kept up by reducing the period whisky was laid up from 7 years to 3.

In 1972 the distillery was enlarged, and the old stills were replaced by four new steam heated stills. In 1999, an Aberfeldy 12 Year Old Single Malt brand was introduced. In 2000, the Earl of Elginopened "Dewar's World of Whisky" at the Aberfeldy Distillery: this is a centre for marketing the products and educating the public about the process of distillation and history of the Dewar's brand.

Aberfeldy is the largest malt whisky component of Dewar's Blended Whisky.

Aberfeldy is situated in the centre of Scotland, some five miles east of Loch Tay and the town of Kenmore and about eight miles south of Loch Tummel. Aberfeldy relies on the fresh water stream Pitilie Burn, which runs alongside the distillery. Aberfeldy is the only distillery in Scotland to use these waters.

The area contains historical landmarks, such as Kenmore Bridge. This was built by the 3rd Earl in 1774 and the view from it was the inspiration for Robert Burns's poem on the chimney piece of the Kenmore Inn.

The distillery has two wash stills with a capacity of about 16,500 litre and two spirit stills with 15,000 litres. With these capacities the Aberfeldy distillery lies in the middle of the range of pot still sizes.

Alderaan is a fictional planet featured in the Star Wars space opera franchise. It is blue-green in appearance and is depicted as a terrestrial planet with humanoid inhabitants. It is the home of Princess Leia, one of the lead characters in the film series. In the original 1977 film, Star Wars, Alderaan is blown up by the Death Star, a giant space station capable of destroying entire planets.

Alas, the bottle has been drained (a pleasurable experience for the staff), removed and also converted to a lamp, leaving only the empty hull of the cylinder and the memory of what could have been.

The converted artwork now has a rotary switch/dimmer and an Edison-style E27 bulb to brighten the corners of your bothy. It has been fitted with rubber feet (not your bothy). The container is about 26cm high with a 11cm diameter. The head is from an upcycled candy container.

It has a switched golden dimmer control and a battery-powered clock, which hides an illuminated USB charger port, itself powered by a 30 watt stabilised power supply. Amber submarine lighting glows beneath the base.

Whiskey-coloured bubbles flicker to the left, above which resides a manometer (pressure gauge) has a scale of 300 lb/sq in.

The 15mm copper piping has brass fittings that are compression type with copper olives (not the type in a Martini, shaken not stirred).

All electrics and electronics are new. The lamp appliance is Class I as defined in IEC 61140 and has been tested. The black neoprene double insulated 3 core 1.6 metre cable includes an in-line black traditional Torpedo 6 amp rocker switch, which disconnects both the Live and Neutral, and complies with BS EN 6108-2-1.  This cable is terminated with a YELLOW 13-amp plug, which complies with BS 1363,  and is fitted with a 2 amp fuse. An additional spare fuse is included.  The other end is terminated with a black IP68 compression TRS M12 cable stuffing gland. Really, we didn’t just make that up.

The clockwork key and water tap are purely cosmetic.
