Aunt Lil's Telephone

A telephone converted to a unique hand-built steampunk dimmable lamp, with vintage valves, car mirror indicator, truck indicator, electric guitar control knob and old-fashioned racing green fabric cable..

This telephone belonged to my beloved Aunt Lil, who had been a telephonist.

It is an STC 746 model. I worked on the production line at STC making these 50 years ago.

The artwork has a skull-and-crossbones rotary switch/dimmer and two Edison-style E14 bulbs to brighten the corners of your bothy. The other side has a recessed mains switch. It has been fitted with extended rubber feet (not your bothy).

The product is about 30cm wide including bulbs, 13cm high and 25cm deep. It has three electronic modules. : switching-mode power supply, lamp modulator and light dimmer.

The cradle switch positions glow red.

In the handset resides two vintage thermionic valves, which glow green. These are purely decorative and have no other function.

The user dial has a subtle rotating red modulation, that may be caused by a hamster with red eyes running in a wheel within.

The traditional racing green fabric double insulated 3 core 1.4 metre cable is terminated with a black 13-amp plug, which complies with BS 1363.  The other end is terminated with a black IP68 compression TRS M12 cable stuffing gland. Really, we didn’t just make that up.
