Canal Grandmother
Unusual steampunk Grandmother clock, made from vintage and upcycled components including a vintage Grandmother clock case, a vintage Rototherm stem thermometer, a vintage bakelite Sangamo Weston multi-range voltmeter, cast brass plaques from a canal barge, pulleys from an American tractor, a wick guard from a Chinese stove, a cooling fan from a vintage Rank projector. a brass radiator key, a cast iron lizard coat hanger, a car indicator and a speaker grille and bezel.
There is an Edison bulb in a cage at the top, which is dimmed by touching the clockwork key at the front.
At the centre of the clock face is a valve mono-clock which glows and pulses the time. This is protected by the original clock glass. The clock is initially set by a pair of brass push buttons mounted on copper rings. When powered off, the clock maintains the time. Below the clock is a clockwork-type key, that, when touched, dims the Edison bulb. Below that is a vintage bakelite Sangamo Weston multi-range voltmeter that still works. Further down is a cast brass plaque from a canal barge, from Cropedy Locks. At the base is an inactive cooling fan from a vintage Rank projector.
On the left a large vintage Rototherm stem thermometer is mounted on a pair of brass Munsen rings. Below that, a perforated cylinder houses a candle-like lamp that constantly flickers and pulsates with a warm glow. At the base resides a cast iron lizard that looks up, wondering where the mice went.
On the right is a set of three pulleys from an American tractor with a jute belt. Above that is a cast brass plaque from a canal barge from Kennet & Avon Canal. Below the top pulley is a recessed mains switch that disconnects the power from the clock.
The product projects a red glow at the back, in a fine pattern. This is driven by a car mirror indicator solid-state lamp under a speaker grille and bezel.
All electrics and electronics are new. There are four electronic modules within including the switching mode dual power supply, lamp dimmer, candle effect solid state bulb and digital clock electronics. The appliance is Class I as defined in IEC 61140 and has been tested. The traditional gold fabric double insulated 3 core 1.9 metre cable is terminated with a black 13-amp plug, which complies with BS 1363.
The clock keeps time, even without the power. You only need to change the time when the clocks go back/forwards. To set the time, set it when all the digits are different, such as 12:34. Depress and release the left button, then press it again for each digit. When the correct digit is showing, use the other button to step through to the required digit.
This artwork is 159cm high X 43 cm wide X 24 cm deep.
