Edradour.....not Mos Eisley
An Edradour whiskey box converted to a unique hand-built steampunk dimmable lamp, with vintage illuminated valves, upcycled head, vintage manometer and illuminated USB charging port…… and a mystery man.
Edradour distillery (Scottish Gaelic: Eadar Dhà Dhobhar, "between two rivers") is a Highland single malt whisky distillery based in Pitlochry, Perthshire. Its owners claim it to be the smallest distillery in Scotland, but this title now belongs to Strathearn Distillery, also in Perthshire. It has been owned by the Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Company since 2002, and was previously owned by Pernod Ricard. Signatory, founded in 1988, is primarily an Independent bottler and is based in Pitlochry.
Established in 1825, the distillery was traditionally run by three men, but now there are just two. Only eighteen casks are produced each week. They have a tour which costs £7.50 and currently includes two drams and a nosing glass.
The wash still has a capacity of 4200 litres and the smaller spirit still 2200 litres.
A variety of whiskies are available from the distillery. Only the Edradour 10-year is chill-filtered, a process by which the esters and oils are removed, producing a cleaner look to the whisky, which when chilled or has ice added to it does not turn cloudy. There is, amongst others, a non-chill-filtered 12-year-old malt, some of which goes into the "House of Lords" and "Clan Campbell" blends.
Also produced for two days in a week is a heavily-peated version of the Edradour called Ballechin.
I have three connections with this lamp :
- I went on the Edradour tour and had a painful head blow from their low doorway
- My wife comes from their hometown of Pitlochry
- I emptied the bottle that was in this box myself. Mmmmmm.
The artwork has a touch dimmer on the base of the “clockwork” key and an Edison-style E27 bulb, held in a traditional ceramic base, to brighten the corners of your bothy. It has been fitted with rubber feet (not your bothy). The product is about 32cm wide, 40 cm high and 15 cm deep.
On either side of the light bulb reside two vintage thermionic valves, which glow blue and green. These are purely decorative and have no other function.
The right-hand side has an illuminated USB charger port, itself powered by a stabilised power supply. Rubber feet have been added to the base.
Whisky-coloured bubbles flicker to the left, above which resides an upcycled manometer (pressure gauge) has a scale of 300 lb/sq in. Normally this will read zero.
The 10mm copper piping has brass fittings that are compression type with copper olives (not the type in a Martini, shaken not stirred).
On the right-hand side is the head of a Star Wars Stormtrooper, upcycled from a candy container.
The lower front reveals a man’s legs, lit by a flickering light, perhaps a lantern. No-one knows who he is or what role he plays in the aesthetic balance between light and dark.
All electrics and electronics are new. The lamp appliance is Class I as defined in IEC 61140 and has been tested. The burgundy fabric double insulated 3 core 1.8 metre cable includes an in-line black traditional Torpedo 6-amp rocker switch, which disconnects both the Live and Neutral, and complies with BS EN 6108-2-1. This cable is terminated with a black 13-amp plug, which complies with BS 1363. The other end is terminated with a black IP68 compression TRS M12 cable stuffing gland. Really, we didn’t just make that up.
