Green Tea
This artwork is based on a vintage chest which we believe was probably initially a posh tea caddy with three separate compartments. It seems later that it was fitted with a lock and used as a jewellery box. The box has veneers and inlays which have felt the wear of the ages past. It can now be described as "homely".
This is an individual hand-built steampunk dimmable lamp, with green illuminated USB charging port, built with upcycled, antique or vintage parts including a tea chest, brass radiator key, original vintage Marconi working voltmeter and ammeter, subdued upcycled green fibre optic submarine lighting below, and reclaimed ornate brass doorknob. Internally there are four different electronic modules : 36W 12V stabilised power supply, step-down electronics for USB charger, touch-dimmer module and power supply for fibre optics.
Touching the the key dims an Edison-style E27 bulb to brighten the corners of your bothy. The artwork is about 40cm wide X 38cm high X 19cm deep.
The green illuminated USB charger port, is powered by a 36 watt stabilised power supply.
A beautiful green glow arrears below the unit, powered by subdued fibre optic lighting.
The two vintage thermionic valves are now inactive and glow green. They no longer have the heat and voltage of their previous lives.
The two vintage black meters are a volt meter and ammeter by Marconi. These are both still working. Companies with "Marconi" in their name can trace their origins through a complex history of mergers, takeovers and divisions, to the 1963-established Marconi Company Ltd, founded in 1897 as the Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company by Guglielmo Marconi.
All other electrics and electronics are new. The Racing Green vintage fabric flexible twisted double insulated 3 core 1.45 metre cable is terminated with a black 13-amp plug, which complies with BS 1363. A mains switch is recessed on the left-hand side. An additional spare fuse is included. The other end is terminated with a black IP68 compression TRS cable stuffing gland. Really, we didn’t just make that up.
