Prime Primus
An individual hand-built steampunk lamp built from a vintage Primus Blow Torch (no. 632).
This unit comes with two E27-fitting screw-in light bulbs. One is a flame/flicker effect, suitable as a bedside night light or ornament (Christmas, Eid, Yom Kippur, Diwali or anniversary of England beating Germany in the 1966 World Cup). The other is a traditional Edison-style bulb to brighten the corners of your shack, making you think that you are living in 1929, after the stock market crash. Note that bulbs shown in the photographs may be different to those delivered due to variations in stock.
The unit centres on a Primus model 632 blow torch from Stockholm. The firm was founded in 1892 by Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist and Johan Viktor Svenson. They were the developers of its initial product, the Primus stove, the first portable and soot-free kerosene stove. The first units were sold mainly to women who operated street market shops in Stockholm. Explorers then discovered the value in having a portable stove for their expeditions. For example, on Salomon August Andrée’s 1897 North Pole expedtition, he cooked on a Primus. Roald Amundsen carried a Primus stove with him on his venture to the South Pole in 1911. And in 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay relied on Primus stoves during their first ascent of Mount Everest.
Primus went on to market a blow torches. This blowtorch bears the legend :
“A/B B.A.HJORTH & C0, STOCKHOLME, SOLE MAKERS OF THE GENUINE PRIMUS APPARATUS”
with the same wording in four different languages directly below.
All electrics and electronics are new. The lamp appliance is Class I as defined in IEC 61140 and has been tested. The burgundy vintage fabric flexible twisted double insulated 3 core 1.7 metre cable is terminated with a black 13-amp plug, which complies with BS 1363, and is fitted with a 1 amp fuse. An additional spare fuse is included. The other end is terminated with a black IP68 compression TRS M12 cable stuffing gland. Really, we didn’t just make that up.
