Pye-Fi 49
Unusual steampunk radio and MP3 player, made from vintage Pye 4-valve Receiver Model Type 49, originally manufactured in Cambridge about seventy years ago.
This artwork also includes upcycled and repurposed components.
The touch control audio interface allows the user to select FM radio, microSD and USB media sources.This system produces about 5 watts per channel and also comes with a remote control.
Behind the original speaker grille on the left is a lightbox panel with candle-flicker backlighting.
To the right is the original glass tuning panel, which is illuminated.
On the left face is a head on a column of illuminated blue bubbles. A separate switch controls the illumination of this.
Ten-watt speakers with red bezels are mounted on both faces.
On the right face is a 15mm gate valve.
Two thermionic valves flicker on top.
All electrics and electronics are new. There are five electronic modules within including the linear-mode power supply, lamp electronics, lamp remote control, audio system electronics and audio remote control. The appliance is Class I as defined in IEC 61140 and has been tested. The traditional red fabric double insulated 3 core 1.4 metre cable is terminated with a black 13-amp plug, which complies with BS 1363.
